Never Too Late to Redefine One's Purpose in Life

Dear Dorothy,

Recently I've embarked on a journey through the dark night of the soul.  I feel as though I've grown a long this way achieving much in life yet now face many troubles. Earlier traumatic memories are resurfacing and health issues are mounting.  These challenges have come at what seems a critical juncture, since I am turning 60 and need to become clearer about my life purpose.  This has sent me into a tailspin resulting in anxiety, panic attacks and discouraging thoughts that I am damaged goods and won't be given a second chance in life.

Dorothy:  Thank you for sharing your insights into this tremendously dynamic time in your life. According to Ayurveda, an ancient system of natural health care, the age of 60 is just leaving adolescence and many decades of useful, productive life can follow. Much can be accomplished in life and in the world with 60 years of accumulated wisdom and experience.

I know that most of our ancestors and most of society today did not grasp this fact, but it is certainly possible for each of us now to own this truth. So, really you should be planning for a rewarding future. . As long as there is life, there is hope. Right?

Both ancestors and our own self from the past can cause thoughts of worthlessness, uselessness, or that we are "damaged goods."  The judgments and false beliefs regarding the limited value of human life were not offered by your ancestors and your past self so that you would hear them and feel them when you got to be this age. But that is what happens, unintentionally.

Within the sacred space where you forge your relationship with yourself, it is possible to change these perceptions.

It is very important to forgive your past self and embrace the good that was within you when you were younger. Your past self is a lesser developed state of you. However, it will act as a great ally rather than an enemy when you embrace it as your own. The more love you send to your past self, the more of the gifts of youth you will be able to harness in your current condition.

Very often our younger selves are full of themselves: egoistic, idealistic, perfectionistic, judgmental, etc. But our younger selves are also, beyond precious, beautiful, and full of energy. So total forgiveness, acceptance, and the flow of the sweetest love in the inner sanctum of your heart toward your past self will bring this part of you around to be a source of support for the current time.

Some great people only come into their greatness when they are over 60. It is up to you to give yourself a second chance.
  • Deciding to do whatever it takes to get yourself in a better state, is the first step. You have already taken this step, obviously. Congratulations!
  • Defining exactly how you will proceed is the next step. For this step, energy work sessions can help, which cause a refining of the alignment of your inner compass with your highest potential. This will help you establish a coordination between your body, mind, and Being. It  will be easier to know when you are aiming in the right direction, because you will feel joy, when you are acting in accord with your highest good, and crummy when you don't. It is like having a true star.
  • Dedicating yourself to taking the action steps which will allow you to move with the dictates of your heart, and the feeling of goodness which guides you, will ensure your progress.
  • The most important thing is to let go of attachments to a particular outcome. Letting go allows the big organizing energies of the universe take over and manifest your desires to be even more beautiful than you could have imagined. Only through this step can you propel yourself into a progressive state. As long as we are caught in our individual conceptions, that is all we will be able to achieve. Letting go brings the cosmic picture into focus and allows one to grow into something greater than can be imagined.
I am sincerely grateful to be part of your amazing story. Clearly, what you are doing is an intimate and powerful part of the transformation taking place for mankind at this time. I feel fortunate for our connection, and so happy that I can contribute in any way to the success of your process.

With love,
Dorothy
